' Ok, so we've all said, "The Amiga's'better than a PC", but who cares if the'machine is dead before you've finished'the sentence. So what will we do if'that happens?? The only thing we can
do...... Buy a PC =-(' After all, how many people sold'their C64/Speccies because they died??'Anyway would YOU keep a dead machine..
(Dead as in Market dead)..' The C64 STILL has a good following'even though the machine has been out of'production for so many years. The'Speccy still has a place in many of our'hearts. But we wouldn't USE one today.'The real KEY to the question "Where is'it Going" lies in the fact that we as'"Computer USERS" merely USE the Amiga'as a means to an end. Will it differ if'the Computer in question is no longer'an Amiga?? Just how many of us when we'say "the PC sucks" REALLY know that it'sucks.. In the same way that we all'said "My Speccy/C64 is better than your'Amstrad CPC464" without TRULY knowing'their true specs, is the PC/Amiga'battle just one of those age old'scenarios? Can you truly say that you'KNOW the Amiga is better than the PC..'I Don't.. what I DO know is that'Windows is a pale version of Workbench,'the OS of the Amiga is far superior to'the PC's, and the whole front end of a'PC stinks.. HOW??, because I've used'them.. What I don't know is the tech-'nical stuff behind this badly prog-'rammed front end.. Maybe if the env-'ironment was as well programmed as the'Amigas then these PC/Amiga arguments'would be pointless (aren't they'anyway?) So the real argument SHOULD be'"My Software is better than your'software". But if the computer is'really a means to an end, then does"&Mine is better than yours" hold water.' But, as usual the Media has yet'another strangle hold on this argument.'Imagine little Joe Bloggs watching TV,'up comes a commercial for INTEL. A CD'ROM speeds through the air leaving a'trail of stars in it's wake, it flips'around the room zooms into a PC running'Windows, into a slot on the front and'makes it way down a circuit board and'meets up with a box labelled Pentium.'The CD-ROM dives into the Box, to'release a wire frame dolphin which then'morphs into a full real image of the'same, and swims casually through the'computer to the message.. INTEL, FREE
YOUR MIND...
THEN!!!
' Two scientists, both looking as'stupid and as boring as all 12 year'olds think scientists are. In their'hands one holds a key, he puts the key'into a computer panel, presses a button'and out pops a monitor and a REALLY'BADLY sculptured robot who proceeds to'play Microcosm and soon blows up'because he (under this assumption)'can't handle "THE COLOURS".. The ONLY'part of that advert that sticks in'Joe's mind is the "OH THE COLOURS!!"..
sad really..' Which one will Joey badger his dad&for??.. The Crappy robot with his lots&of colours or.. The star spangled CD"with it's magic morphing Dolphins?& It's true, this image will sell&more PC's to little Joe's than the&Amiga one. Why, because they are aimed&at a different market.. There are&Intel adverts for all fields. Multi-&media, Games, Business, Operating"systems. What does the Amiga get??
G - A - M - E - S..
&What's the betting that ESCOM breaks&this tradition of showing the Amiga as
a games machine. NIL??& Ok, we assume that the Amiga's'software CAN be better, but where is'the backup? WE, as Amiga owners know'this, BUT the idea is to convince'little Joe and his dad into this.. A'machine that costs
399? (What!!) plays'games, yet does a whole lot more.. A'machine that can offer the dad some-
thing as well..' I for one don't trust Escom as far'as I could throw a septic camel, will'they as one magazine writer said, "Sell'off their old stock, and rob the chips'for Set Top Boxes". But the most'important to me as an Amiga owner (for'7 years) will they continue to support'the Amiga in ways that we need to be'supported.. Hardware needs to come down'in price to compete with the PC, (
399'for a stand alone Amiga, you've GOT to'be kidding). And THEY NEED TO ADVERTISE'THE AMIGA IN A WAY WHICH IS BENEFICIAL.'I felt sorry for the Commodore UK'buy-out team.. they sounded ENTHUS-'IASTIC, they provided DETAILS about'future plans, they took input from'Amiga USERS, they wrote articles in'Amiga mags, they LET US KNOW ... What'have Escom done..?? SOD ALL.... The'biggest blow came when they refused to'sell their own machine in their own'shops.. Doesn't that tell us something'about how serious they are about the'Amiga's future.. And this is what the#potential buyers hear as well...!!!' Anyway, I hope the Amiga survives'for another 10 years, but even with the'support of it's loyal users, it's now'all in ESCOM's hands. Without their'support the Amiga is only an underrated'machine which happens to have a great'following. NOT a highly rated machine'that just happens to have a great'following. Going back to the start of'this text, it's the HYPE that sells,'the banter of the masses, the arguments'that cause us to look closer at the'reality behind the hype.. And if that'banter gives the wrong impressions then'Joe's dad will spend his
